RIETVELD ACADEMY
GRADUATION EXHIBITION
poster series
Collaboration with Mikk Heinsoo.
For the graduation campaign we wanted to work with the names of the graduating students and the name of the school / the architect of the school building, as the only material for the graduation poster. We felt that this was the most direct way to communicate our message.
At the time that we made the poster there were students from 59 different countries studying at the Rietveld Academy. About half of the 180 students that graduated in 2008 were foreigners. Therefore the list was very diverse.
We started sorting the names after different criteria. We came up with categories that are less obvious than country of origin, department of study, age, etc. Our lists were ordered after the sound of names, language
conventions, length of names, alphabetically, the literal meanings of names and so forth.
A great diversity of meanings of these name constellations unfolded.
We were interested in process based design which gives us the
opportunity to let ourselves be surprised by solutions that unfold on their own. Therefor we printed the name 'Rietveld' with letterpress beforehand on all posters. The second layer - the student names - had to be designed in this template and was printed with silkscreen.
