Observations of a Celebration
NL&NY 2009
book

'Observations of a Celebration,
NL&NY 2009' is the conclusion of Eva Pel's fieldwork in New York in the summer of 2009. The Dutch government organized many festivities in New York City to commemorate the arrival of Henry Hudson in 1609 on the shores of what is now called New York City. By visiting all the festivities in New York, Eva wanted to get an idea about how the Netherlands is being represented in New York.

When Eva came back from New York we faced a pile material (interviews, photos, historical images and texts) that triggered a lot of questions: What did the Netherlands want to show to New Yorkers about their history, present and future? Which audience did the festival reach? How can the effects of a 6,1 million euro investment of the Dutch government for this event be measured? Did the Dutch make a difference in New York? And ultimately: Where is the Netherlands (representing also western society) headed?

Published by Eva Pel and myself, this book does not give answers to the questions that came up during its making. Even more so: we hope that by going through the interviews and images, the reader will come up with more questions him-/herself.

Interviewed are among others, the politician in charge, Frans Timmersmans; the urban shaman of New York City, Donna Henes; the director of the Dutch Theater Institute, Henk Scholten; an American historian, Roger Panetta and the architect of the New Netherlands Pavilion, Ben van Berkel.
